Guest Editor: Rachel ZoeWhen considering potential Guest Editors for February, we wanted to pick someone who you love, of course, but also someone who has an over-the-top love for all things fashion. The answer came to us in a second: Rachel Zoe. The star stylist is amazing for so many reasons—her impeccable taste, wildly addictive TV show, darling newsletter, and upcoming eponymous clothing line—plus, we're such big fans of her unabashedly enthusiastic attitude. (The fact that Zoe's never jaded about what she does and still swoons for couture? It's beyond endearing.) Even though the unstoppable Zoe is currently prepping for two huge upcoming events—motherhood and dressing Anne Hathaway for her gig co-hosting the Oscars—she took the time to create a killer Guest Editor story for you. As a well-known devotee to '70s glamour, this season is particularly rife with goodies for Zoe to go ga-ga over, so it's no surprise that she included some nods to that era, like high-waisted flares from J Brand, a blouson maxi dress from Marc Jacobs, and a retro pair of oversized Tom Ford sunglasses. Of course there are some majorly modern pieces too (think: an insane pair of Givenchy platform ankle boots) all of which are totally TDF. Read on for all of Zoe's amazing spring obsessions and prepare to fall in love with her picks! Tom Ford Carter Sunglasses ($340) in Red Havana "You can tell a lot about a woman by her sunnies," Zoe says. "To me, sunglasses are everything. They are the perfect compliment to any outfit, plus, putting on a pair of sunglasses takes much less thought that choosing the right jewelry for your look." So what is the stylist gravitating to for spring? A gorgeous round pair of Tom Ford shades in a flattering tortoiseshell hue. They're glamorous, but still a little earthy, in other words: perfect for our Guest Editor (and you!). Not sure you're ready to invest in this exact pair? Try UO's Hazy Days Sunglasses ($10) in Tort for a likeminded look. NARS Illuminator ($29) in Orgasm Zoe's makeup artist recently introduced her to this skin-accentuating illuminator and now she's "hooked" on it. Much like the brand's best-selling, award-winning blush of the same name, the Illuminator is available in Orgasm, a peachy pink shade with a touch of gold shimmer. Use it all over your face or as a highlighter, over or under makeup, mixed with foundation or solo—however you use it, you'll end up with a highly desirable glow. Burberry Prorsum Double Strap Python Waist Belt ($795) in Lime We were particularly curious about the accessories Zoe would pick for today's story and she definitely wowed us with her choice of belts. Her reasoning was simple: "Burberry always brings down the house with their insane add-ons and this season is no exception," she says. Topping her list: this double-buckle belt in a stunning shade of green. Want a similarly wide cincher in a more neutral color? Try B-Low The Belt's Luis Belt ($138) in Black. Dying for a snakeskin style but want something with a slimmer silhouette? Check out MICHAEL Michael Kors' Reversible Skinny Belt ($42) in Python/Gold. J Brand 1277 Bette Jeans ($218) in Wonderama Much like your Who What Wear editors, Zoe is skipping the skinnies and going for flare jeans instead! (Truthfully, this is one of her signature silhouettes.) She loves these new J Brand jeans, citing their wide-leg, high-waisted silhouette and cute front pockets as the reason for her adoration. 3.1 Phillip Lim Oversized Hand-Embroidered Metal Rosette Trench ($1200, 310.358.1988) in Black "I cannot recall a period in fashion when the trench wasn't in style," Zoe says, giving us yet another reason to stock up on this wardrobe essential. While she adores a number of trench options this season, this heavenly piece from 3.1 Phillip Lim received top marks. Since the trench is embellished, Zoe will keep the rest of her look understated and let this stunning piece of outerwear take the spotlight. While you'll be hard pressed to find anything that lives up to the extraordinary look of the 3.1 Phillip Lim trench, we do think that Pixie Market's Silky Trench ($164) makes a fine substitute. Serge Lutens Clair de Musc Perfume ($120) While Zoe might love a dramatic shoe or an oversized necklace, when it comes to perfume, she definitely prefers to take a subtler route. "I think a fragrance is meant to be smelled when you kiss someone hello—not when you walk by," she says. This scent from Serge Luten works for her because it's fresh without being overpowering. Hermes Kelly Bag (price upon request, 212.751.3181) As an accessories maven, Zoe knows her handbags and sees every available style on the market each season. While she has her favorites—Chloe, Chanel, and Givenchy—the carryall that's currently capturing her heart is this timeless Hermes Kelly. The 40 cm bag is black with gold hardware and Zoe calls it her "everything." No. Duh. Until Rodger buys you your own Kelly, you might like Kate Spade New York's Cobble Hill Leslie Leather Satchel ($425), as it has a similarly boxy shape. Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci Open Toe Ankle Boots ($1500, available at select Barneys stores) Can you imagine Zoe in flats? Not so much. The woman is all about a high, high, high heel, typically with some sort platform. Accordingly, she adores these seriously standout platform ankle boots from Givenchy. While Zoe likes chocolate brown as an unexpected and refreshing alternative to black this season, the boots are also available in that darker hue. Just check out the 120 MM Ankle Strap Open-Toe Boots ($1990) if brown isn't your thing! Marc Jacobs Strapless Bandeau Drop Waist Long Dress ($1600, available mid-Feburary) in Apricot Zoe promises that she'll never get sick of little party dresses, but this season she's interested in longer, '70s-inspired dresses, especially the runway iterations she saw at Marc Jacobs. "At his show, the dresses were styled with big hair and major makeup," she says, but you don't have to follow those directions for real life. Instead, do as Zoe suggests and pair your maxi with a messy pony and minimal jewelry for a perfect warm-weather look! While Zoe's exact pick isn't in stock quite yet, Karina Grimaldi's Bessy Strapless Long Dress ($262) and Patterson J. Kincaid's Linen Maxi Dress ($168) are available, so be sure to take a peek at both! Raquel Allegra Chestplate Appliqué Blouse ($490, available at select Barneys stores) Once known for the one-of-a-kind shredded tops she made out of recycled Los Angeles County Prison System shirts, designer Raquel Allegra's line is now focused on more luxurious materials. She's expanded and elevated her collection to include knits, wovens, leather, cashmere, mohair and more, resulting in pieces like this incredible silk, rayon, and cotton blouse. Zoe loves its effortless and relaxed lines and would pair it with a "crisp pair of jeans" for a perfect spring look. For a less pricey take on this piece, try Free People's Desert People Tunic ($78). Chanel Metal and Beige Fabric Necklace ($2450, 800.550.0005) Zoe calls this her "fantasy piece for the season" and we can totally see why. Pulled straight from the S/S 11 runway, the bib necklace is a serious statement piece, but thanks to the pale color palette, it's not overwhelming. Now, we'll be the first to admit that Zoe's pick is aspirational, which is why we found a lovely—and less expensive—alternative for you: J. Crew's Livia Chain Mail Necklace ($125)! Tom Ford S/S 11 Collection Our Guest Editor admits to adoring so many spring collections—including Sarah Burton's debut designs for Alexander McQueen—but the one that really stands out came from Tom Ford. "He always told me that he would do a collection when he had something to say, and, as you can see, he has a lot to say," she says. Zoe admits that it's hard for her to pick just one look ("they are all insane") but Look 28 gets major points in her book. The gown that caught Zoe's eye is a flesh-colored silk georgette evening column with hand-embroidered and hand-painted fringe—a real showstopper. Will we see it on stage at the Oscars? Only time will tell... |
