Rachel Opens up to Elle
Noted stylist and tastemaker Rachel Zoe hosted a presentation of her fall 2011 collection today in NYC. Held at a swank studio overlooking the Hudson River, the loft space exuded a cool calm. A calm that, as with most fashion events, eluded the backstage area.
“I need someone to cover a bruise!” screamed the production head, punctuating our chat with Temptu makeup artist Talia Shobrook, who created glamorously sculpted ’70s faces to match the retro-chic pieces. Moments later, Zoe herself was backstage making last-minute adjustments to models’ outfits. Soon, however, all was in place—and a procession of leggy ingĂ©nues made their way to the stage. Post-presentation, Zoe was all smiles in a black off-the-shoulder dress from her line. Check out our interview with her below!
What prompted you to create your own collection?
I’ve had all these ideas bottled in my head for such a long time and it was finally the right time to bring them to life. I’ve learned so much from being a stylist and I wanted to bring some of my knowledge and experience to the girl that loves fashion. I am completely in love with every piece in this collection.
During the presentation, you mentioned that you were a fan of the white tiered gown because it was comfortable. Why did you go black today?
I’m just going to let the models wear white! I’m moving around and working too much to wear white. Plus, I’m pregnant—believe me, I would’ve been in one of the suits with a tuxedo top. I mean, listen, this is super comfortable for me, but I don’t know that I’d wear a long black dress in the middle of the day if I wasn’t pregnant! When you’re pregnant it’s all about looking cute and not fussing.
Your baby is going to be the best-dressed kid ever! What sorts of styles are you gravitating toward?
I’ve been plotting what he’s going to wear for awhile. I don’t want to push it on him, you know what I mean? I don’t want him to resent me for it. But there’s so much cute stuff—Burberry, Dior, All Saints… Oh, and Gucci now has a [baby] clothing line… I also love Baby Gap, J. Crew, and Stella McCartney. I haven’t bought anything yet because I’m superstitious. A lot of people have been buying me gifts, but I’m not opening them!
