Gap obviously has a New Year's resolution to offer shoppers something new in the denim department. True to its promise, the retailer has delivered.

Make sure to look out for the new High Rise Trouser (with a 7 5/8-inch front rise on a sample size 6) and the Sexy Boot Jean, which fits similar to a denim legging up top and breaks lower than Gap's basic bootcut style.

Also, this style offers a slightly slimmer leg opening and has a lower rise and squared-off waist. Both new styles are hitting Gap stores and Gap.com this month. Each of these styles channels the '70s, when waistbands sat higher on the body and leg openings were much more generous.

According to a statement from Gap's executive vice president of design, Patrick Robinson, the decade has an important influence on the Spring 2011 season as a whole, hence the reason for these updated styles. "To enhance the sophistication of the look, you can pair it with a fitted button-down blouse or a light washed-denim shirt," he suggests.

The new styles retail from $69.50 to $79.50 and each is available in an array of washes to choose from -- there's even a clean white wash, which you'll want to scoop up for summer.
